Chapter Ten
They walked to the park near his building, armed with a blanket, snacks, and drinks from the nearby bodega. Henry's Frisbee and balls were in a bag on Ethan's back. After spreading the blanket under a tree in the park, he let Henry off-leash. He tossed a ball for the dog as Evie readied their bread and cheese, veggies, and fresh fruits. It was a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, and the park was packed. Ethan was wearing a hat and sunglasses, although Evie thought his smile and physique made him easy to spot if you knew what to look for.
She ripped off a piece of baguette and smeared it with a good amount of goat cheese. After popping it in her mouth, she hummed with delight.
Ethan watched her with affection. He moved to touch her but stopped suddenly.
Evie swallowed. "Something wrong? Is it my obvious love of cheese? I can't help it, I'm Midwestern. It's in my genes."
He snickered. "No, that's understandable. I just think it's wise to keep our distance in public, just in case. I don't want you to have to deal with my internet savvy fans. They're like detectives. If your picture is on the internet, they will somehow find out everything about you."
Evie glanced around, uneasy at the thought of strangers hunting for information about her. All of her social media was private, but there were various items about her non-profit work. What really concerned her were the articles written after Liam's death. She adjusted her sunglasses. "I definitely don't want that."
"Good thing we're just pals."
She slugged him playfully in the shoulder. "Good buddies."
"Friends to the end. Like Marius and Enjolras."
"Is Les Miserables really what we want to balance this 'friendship' on?"
"Until the French Revolution begins, sure." He tossed a baby carrot into his mouth and grinned.
After they'd eaten, and it was clear that no one was paying attention to them, Evie started tossing Henry the Frisbee, while Ethan, still lying on the blanket, took an occasional photo. The game went on for nearly a quarter of an hour before Henry finally lost interest and rolled on the grass, panting. Ethan was reaching for dog treats when she noticed the three girls standing on the nearby path.
They were blatantly staring. At Ethan.
"Shit," Evie said, "I didn't see them."
He casually followed her gaze. The girls were clearly trying to be cool about raising phones in their direction.
Unnerved, Evie began to pack up the food.
"Man. This rarely happens in New York. Let's just hang out for a bit, and I'll let Julie know."
The tension in his face was obvious, though he was trying to hide it. She looked over his shoulder as he quickly typed a text to his publicist.
Jules, chicks in the park snapping photos of Evie and Henry and me. Not sure how long they've been watching, just noticed them. Just FYI, social media will probably blow up in a second.
A few minutes later, his phone buzzed.
Well. She's very pretty. :) Don't worry, it's total speculation, and it's just photos of her and the dog with you in the background.
